CARMEN ORTIZ

A breast-cancer survivor who has changed the lives of hundreds of Bay Area Latina women by providing language-based support groups for those who are living with cancer.  To learn more about Carmen's story, click here.

KENYA

LORNAH KIPLAGAT

Lornah Kiplagat, one of Kenya's first great female marathoners, defied Kenya's traditional roles for women at home and on the farm by using her prize money to establish and operate a camp to train the next generation of women runners.  Part of the proceeds from Spark's Black and Pink Ball will support Lornah and the High Altitude Training Center.

 

Bangladesh

Plagued by chronic unemployment and lack of skills and education, nearly 80% of the people in Bangladesh live on less than $2 a day.  The situation is especially dire for women and girls, who have even fewer employment and education opportunities than men.  The Association for Community Development, founded by Salima Sarwar, addresses this with programs on literacy, human rights, education, trafficking, as well as an innovative tree-planting initiative that has helped numerous women gain economic independence.

These mothers in Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico all have one thing in common: their daughters have been kidnapped and killed in a rash of killings that continues even today.  They have come together to find justice and hope for the future generation.
